An Interview with Ted Cook

Hello everyone and welcome back! Today we’re diving into the important world of elder protection with Ted Cook, an elder protection attorney based right here in beautiful San Diego.

What sparked your passion for protecting our senior citizens?

Ted leans back in his chair, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. “Well, it wasn’t one specific thing,” he begins. “But seeing firsthand how vulnerable older adults can be, especially to financial exploitation or neglect, really struck a chord with me. I wanted to use my legal skills to make a real difference in their lives.”

Can you walk us through the process of elder protection?

  • Initial Client Engagement
  • Case Assessment
  • Protective Actions
  • Legal Proceedings
  • Long-Term Planning
  • Case Resolution & Follow-Up

Let’s delve into “Protective Actions”. Can you elaborate on what that stage entails?

Ted nods enthusiastically. “This is often a critical juncture, where we need to act swiftly and decisively to safeguard the elder’s well-being.” He explains how this stage might involve securing restraining orders against abusers, notifying Adult Protective Services, or even petitioning for guardianship or conservatorship if the individual lacks capacity to make sound decisions.

“We also focus on financial protections,” Ted adds. “That could mean freezing bank accounts to prevent further exploitation, revoking power of attorney if it’s being misused, or taking steps to protect the elder’s assets from being wrongfully transferred.”

“One case involved a woman whose caregiver was systematically stealing from her,” Ted recalls. “We were able to intervene, stop the theft, and get her into a safer living situation. Seeing her regain control of her life was truly gratifying.”

Any last thoughts for our readers, Ted?

Ted smiles warmly. “If you suspect an elder is being abused or neglected, please don’t hesitate to reach out for help. There are resources available, and you don’t have to go through this alone.” He pauses, adding with sincerity, “Protecting our elders is everyone’s responsibility.”
